Scrap Snap Quilt Along: Block Assembly

These basic blocks come together in a snap! After the cutting, this part is a breeze. Do you get bored sewing the same blocks over and over? Sometimes I do! With the Scrap Snap quilt, you'll make 10 different blocks each month, then repeat for 12 months. I find this just the right balance between keeping my attention and relaxing through some piecing I've done before.

General Notes

  • Sew with a scant 1/4'' seam allowance.
  • Pieces are sewn right sides together.
  • Press towards the larger piece or darker piece each time you piece something together. (I'm a big advocate for pressing to the side because of the strength it gives your quilt top.) When I sewed them this way, I found that they almost always nested as I wanted them without having to plan ahead. I rarely had to repress to another direction, even when assembling blocks.
  • The blocks can be rotated as you like when you assemble your quilt. The geometry of the blocks will work together in any direction.
  • I once caught myself sewing a piece to a block unit on the opposite side as pictured here. You know what? It doesn't matter and I left it. You can too! You just need to make a 6-1/2'' square.
  • The directions are given for sewing 10 blocks each month. The totals for the entire quilt top are given in italics after it.
  • Unfinished block size is 6-1/2'' square (6'' finished).

Sew Basic Units (each month)

These units are color coded so you can see how they fit into the finished blocks. By making these parts first, you can save some time with chain piecing.

Sew together (28) A together in pairs to make (14) A + A units. Set aside (9) A + A units.

Total for entire top: 168 A + A units

Sew the remaining (5) A + A units to (1) B to make (5) A + A + B units.

Total for entire top: 60 A + A + B units

Sew (5) A to (5) B to make (5) A + B units.

Total for entire top: 60 A + B units
